What is preventive maintenance?
Preventive maintenance refers to the routine upkeep of your vehicle to ensure it runs efficiently and to prevent potential issues that could leave you stranded. Manufacturers understand that a well-maintained vehicle is more reliable, safer, longer-lasting, and enhances customer satisfaction. Preventive maintenance typically involves:
- Windshield wiper servicing
- Tune-ups or servicing/replacement of spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap, and rotor
- Air filter replacement
- Engine oil changes
- Differential gear oil changes
- Transaxle oil changes
- Regular hose inspections
- Battery maintenance
- Exterior drive belt replacement
- Inspection of brake rotors, hydraulic lines, and brake linings
- Servicing or replacing transmission oil and filter
- Timing belt replacement
- Brake fluid flushing
- Power steering fluid flush
- Antifreeze replacement or flush
- Tire rotation
- Exhaust system leak inspection
- Brake caliper and wheel cylinder inspection

What maintenance should I be doing and when?
These are general service recommendations based on time or mileage intervals rather than visual inspection or measurements. Their main goal is to extend your vehicle’s lifespan and help avoid unexpected breakdowns. Keep in mind that your vehicle’s needs may vary depending on your driving habits and the manufacturer’s guidelines. Always refer to your owner’s manual and consult your service advisor for specific recommendations.
- OIL – LUBE – FILTER: Every 3,000 to 5,000 miles
- TIRE ROTATION: Every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, depending on tire type
- PCV VALVE: Replace and service annually
- WHOLE VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC: Annually, and before buying or selling a vehicle
- FUEL FILTER: Annually or as needed
- BATTERY SERVICE: Annually or as needed
- AIR CONDITIONING: Check every spring or as needed
- RADIATOR COOLANT FLUSH: Every two years
- BRAKE SYSTEM FLUSH: Every year
- CLUTCH SYSTEM FLUSH: Every year
